Exhibition by Brazilian artist Mariannita Luzzati with special participation by ceramist Carina Ciscato

About

Brazilian landscape and its environment have always been the central point of Mariannita Luzzati work.

This exhibition was conceived by Luzzati to deal with the concept of migrant vegetation. She explores physical and spiritual paths traced by man on our planet defining the geological physiognomy of different civilisations throughout the ages.

Brazilian landscape is known by its extraordinary diversity. An example of it is the Botanical Garden in Rio de Janeiro created by Prince Dom João de Bragança in 1811 to acclimate plants brought from East India to Brazil. The creation of this huge botanical park changed the climate and landscape of the city and was fundamental in order to create an environment for the species that coexist with the surrounding tropical forests.

Such migrations have radically transformed and retransformed pre-existing situations and contexts. Paleo-botanical research developed from macro-fossils and pollen diagrams indicates that, long before any human intervention, plant species had already migrated due to climate change, natural disturbances and developmental processes. The effects of human intervention on forest ecosystems, however, have been increasing due to population growth and the diversification of human activities.

In order to create a counterpoint with a broader idea of Brazil, Luzzati invites to this exhibition the ceramist Carina Ciscato, whose works bring materials from different regions of the world looking for unconventional shapes, altering the usual proportions and sizes to question space and volume, function and purpose, balance and fragility, in search of its own aesthetic, allowing new meanings and new observations.

The exhibition aims to open a platform for a reflection about Brazil bringing the possibilities of man reconnecting with nature at its pure state.

Born in São Paulo, Luzzati represented Brazil at the 22nd São Paulo International Biennial. Her works integrate important public collections in Brazil and abroad such as: Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts in Tokyo, Museu de Arte de Brasília; Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, University of Essex in Colchester and The British Museum in London.
