Die Eröffnung ist am 05.10.2017 um 19 Uhr in Anwesenheit der Künstlerin und den Kuratoren und mit gemeinsamen Besuch von Forbidden Symmetries von Mariana Castillo Deball um 19.30 Uhr auf dem Rathausvorplatz. Anschließend findet eine Liveperformance von Dubben Dig ab 21 Uhr statt.

Im Rahmen der Ausstellungsreihe UP (Unsustainable Privileges) erschafft die Künstlerin Mariana Castillo Deball in der Ausstellung Pleasures of Association, and Poisson, such as Love­­­‑ eine spiralförmige Installation eines Stammbaumes, die die Entwicklung des Wirbeltieres vom Fisch zum Vogel, welche sich über einen Zeitraum von 200 Millionen Jahren vollzog, erfahrbar gemacht- Ein unfassbarer Zeitraum wird greifbar.

Wir Menschen haben das Privileg, uns mit evolutionären Prozessen auseinanderzusetzen, sie Assoziieren zu können, ihnen eine Ordnung zu geben und sie dadurch zu gestalten. Auf der anderen Seite geht im Hinblick auf die Urzeit der evolutionäre Prozess weit über die menschliche Existenz hinaus.

Ausgangspunkt für die Arbeit der Künstlerin ist ihre Begeisterung für Fossilien und deren Assoziation mit der Lithografie sowie die Veränderung der Evolutionsforschung im Zuge der technischen Entwicklung. Mariana Castillo Deballs »Pleasures of Association, and Poisson, such as Love­­­‑« thematisiert die Rivalität zwischen unterschiedlichen Techniken zur Erstellung von wissenschaftlichen „Fakten“, die jeweils eine unterschiedliche Sicht auf die Evolution zeigen.

Deball arbeitet in ihrer künstlerischen Praxis eng mit Wissenschaftler*innen der Archäologie, Paläontologie, Ethnographie und Geschichte zusammen. Ihr geht es um die Rekontextualisierung von historischen Dokumenten, Artefakten und, wie hier, sedimentierte Körper, Fossilien. Abreibungen mit Tinte auf Papier von fossilen Exemplaren des evolutionären Prozesses des Wirbeltiers hängen in einer raumgreifenden Bambusbaumstruktur in der Galerie Wedding. Durch die natürliche Form der Spirale wird eine Zeitangabe gemacht: die ältesten Fossilien hängen tiefer, die zeitlich näher am Menschen sind, hängen höher. Während die zeitliche Ordnung präsent ist, steht dennoch der visuelle Eindruck im Vordergrund.

Zusätzlich, wird im Rahmen der Ausstellung eine bleibende Arbeit von Deball im öffentlichen Raum, dem Rathausvorplatz lanciert. Sie ist Teil des neuen Gehwegs und besteht aus speziellen Pflastersteinen mit organischen Gravuren der Künstlerin, die ein kreisförmiges, sich aus der Mitte entfaltendes Penrose-Muster bilden. »Forbidden Symmetries« verwirft die traditionelle funktionale Pflasterung und hinterlässt eine abweichende Spur, eine schräge Archäologie, oder einen möglichen Fund. Fördermittelgeber für diese Arbeit ist die Senatsverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung und Wohnen und sie ist das Ergebnis eines Kunstwettbewerbes.

Within the framework of the UP series (Unsustainable Privileges), the artist Mariana Castillo Deball, in the exhibition Pleasures of Association, and Poisson, such as Love, creates a spiral installation of a genealogical tree which illustrates the development of the vertebrate – from fish to bird – which occurred over a period of 200 million years. An inconceivable period becomes tangible.

We humans have the privilege to unpick evolutionary processes, to be able to associate, give order to and shape them. On the other hand, the evolutionary process stems back to a time long preceding human existence.

The starting point for the artist’s work is her enthusiasm for fossils and their association with lithography as well as the change in evolutionary research during technical development. Mariana Castillo Deball’s »Pleasures of Association, and Poisson, such as Love« thematizes the rivalry between different techniques for creating scientific »facts«, each showing a different view of Evolution.

In her artistic practice, Deball works closely with scientists of archeology, paleontology, ethnography and history. She is concerned with the recontextualization of historical documents, artifacts and, as in this case, sedimented bodies and fossils. Abrasions with ink on paper from fossil specimens of the evolutionary process of the vertebrate are suspended from a space-enveloping bamboo tree structure inside Galerie Wedding. Through the natural form of the spiral, a time is specified: the oldest fossils hang lower, while those temporally nearer to humans, hang higher. While the temporal order is present, it is the visual impression that is brought to the fore.

In Addition, we have the honor of launching a public work by Mariana Castillo Deball at Rathausvorplatz, »Forbidden Symmetries«, 2016. It is part of the new local paving, and consists of special paving Stones which are placed in a circular pattern growing from the middle. A Penrose Parquet pattern, with tiles showing the artists’ organic engravings. “Forbidden Symmetries” discards the functional paving pattern and creates a deviation, a fake archeology or potential discovery for everyone, who passes by. This work has been funded by Senatsverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung und Wohnen and is the winner of an competition for art.

On 27th October at 8pm there will be a talk with Mariana Castillo Deball, Gabriela Aguileta and Pantheologen Florian Witzmann, finishing with a sound performance from Coco Maria from 8.30pm until 11pm
