The Money Plot

About

The editors of Balzac's novel La Cousine Bette decided that in order to truly understand the complex network of the characters‚ relationships and intrigues in the book, the reader must be provided with a synopsis they termed The Money Plot - a breakdown of debts, financial dependencies and connections between the protagonists. The Money Plot lies behind all human relationships. The Money Plot is at the heart of many a great novel. This exhibition (a collection of paintings, drawings and archival & found materials) by Russian born, London based artist Margarita Gluzberg, investigates the marketplace and how it underlies all human social constructs. Compiling an eclectic set of visual propositions that contain autobiographical material from her Soviet childhood, historical images of the English industrial North, glittering contemporary shop facades of Bond Street, and iconic pictures of trading floors, Gluzberg pieces together a bio-fictional history of consumption and its effects.
