Soloway is pleased to present, Glass Water Light, an installation and performance series by sound and visual artist Maralie Armstrong-Rial.
About
The sculptures and unrefined lenses in this show manipulate and refract light. Their transparency illuminates distortion. Here there are sea glass artifacts found washed upon the shores of Babylon, NY. Here there are also vessels which hold water to aid in scrying that were cast at the Corning Museum of Glass. When I see this glass I see an ancient material history of telecommunications, astronomy, and occult.
In tracing this material lineage I recorded bodies of water in these regions from the ancient Susquehanna River to East River and to the luminous edge of the Atlantic Ocean. These interconnected histories are kept abstracted and liquescent. The hydrophone recordings will be utilized in a sound performance on opening night.
“Transparency itself… is already the first degree of the opposite state.”
--Goethe
Maralie Armstrong-Rial is a Brooklyn based artist, vocalist, producer, and educator whose work finds heritage in a genealogy of spiritual and sensual expression via technology. A reaching for the unseen or celestial otherness is often evoked. Meditations on the Eternal and the temporal form her/their living pattern of dance. Maralie performs and records solo as VALISE and collaboratively as Humanbeast.
