About

Press “Play”. Press “Stop”. Rewind then Play again.

We’ve done it so many times staring at the TV with the VCR rewinding our favourite tape.

This can be done with different artistic experiences, different tools, recalling different memories.  We could even rewind the tape of our entire life and get the chance to listen to it all over again in melancholic joy. And we could do so by using a simple pencil.

Few lines, and reality mixes with plausibility, Victorian living rooms blooming into industrial compounds, domestic landscapes sketched on ripped walls.

Those are the stage wings, in a constant equilibrium between the desire to maintain the origins and to create new trails, used by Mar Hernández coming back to Rome from the 15th of June until the 31st of July. The show Rewind is going to be her second solo show at the White Noise Gallery following her debut in 2015. This show will be the final chapter of the Trilogy of Silence, curated by Eleonora Aloise and Carlo Maria Lolli Ghetti.

The young Spanish artist defines herself as an illustrator both by profession and vocation: a total commitment to the arts, that attracted the attention of important museums all over Europe that decided to acquire some of her works.

Using etching, photography and graphics, Mar tries to identify and mark the subtle line between collapse and reconstruction, lost and salvaged identity, nullification and preservation.

Her poetry gives back value to those locations that witnessed historic and human transformations and shows, through the drawn line, the indelible traces of the past and their heritage.

Her research starts from pictures of abandoned places, seen as containers of a suspended time. On them the artist draws uninhabited interiors, like a family portrait where all the characters have been erased.

In Rewind the absence of any kind of human beings leaves us in a thick silence full of pathos, where the objects are the only witnesses of the people who have been there.

Transporting the spectator in an undetermined time dimension, Hernández regenerates life through etching and drawing, making all the real or imaginary furniture reappear. An overlaying of levels, where the passage of time appears inexorably visible.

Using the lead the artist projects in the dead rooms, on the old walls and the destroyed floors the shadows of what has been, creating interiors that appear physically empty but are emotionally full.

Mar digs through the ruins of time, to give places back their voices. The result, in absence of any kind of life form, remains inevitably silent.

Rewind is going back and forth at the same time: they are forces of equal intensity. Their encounter creates a human archaeology that goes beyond the boundaries of the works, generating an installations that overcomes the two-dimensionality of the frame and occupies space.
