About

Mapping the others: New Contemporary Art Episode One - On Beauty Private View date tbc 15th-29th April The Others Top floor 6 and 8 Manor Road London N16 5SA info@theothers.uk.com www.theothers.uk.com Mapping the others: New Contemporary Art Episode One - On Beauty The Others is an independent art space at the heart of Stoke Newington, committed to presenting and supporting excellent ideas from the fringes of contemporary culture. We are launching a new series of group shows dedicated to presenting the best in young contemporary art from across artistic disciplines. Mapping the others: New Contemporary Art explores how techniques such as representation, appropriation and the figurative inform the current landscape of young art. The series of exhibitions questions the processes and frames of reference of contemporary art. Episode One juxtaposes the urban with the classical, the painterly with the illustrative, in order to shape a dialogue around artists' perspectives on notions of contemporary aesthetics. Featuring work by an international collective of artists, including: Pearl Bates is a London based painter and illustrator whose bewitching works come from an enticing dream world full of enchantment, intoxication, a touch of humour, and lashings of glamour. Previous exhibitions have been held at The Puccio Gallery in Manhattan, The Last Gallery in Zurich, DB International Fine Art in Marbella, The X Gallery in Berlin, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, amongst others. Elli Chortara is a freelance illustrator based in London. She holds an MA in Illustration obtained at Camberwell College of Arts. Her work is a combination of abstract and graphic elements, interpreting magazine articles/text or words/meanings. Having professional experience in both graphic design and Illustration she is working as an editorial illustrator but also applies her work in other areas such as sleeve/greeting card design, self published books and hand made toys. Sarawut Chutiwongpeti is a Thai artist working in mixed media installation and film/video, directing his energies towards the exploration of the phenomenon of cross-interdisciplinary of art and culture. He has exhibited internationally at London Art Fair 2010, Modern and Contemporary British Art in UK, Union Gallery in Canada, Watermill Centre in New York and Gyeonggido Museum of Modern Art in Korea, amongst others. Anna Gartsunova is a Russian fine artist working with both the abstract and the figurative. She is currently interested in the image of an individual as a product of belonging. She has exhibited both in London and abroad, including Puskin House, NO:ID Gallery, Tate Modern. Wen Wu is a Chinese fine artist based in London interested in constructs of beauty. She has drawn inspiration from classical oil paintings, and carefully selects aspects of different histories and cultures to form definite vantage points. She has exhibited both in London, Seoul and Beijing, including institutions such as BHVU and Sartorial Contemporary Art. Events: The exhibition will also be accompanied by a series of live events, including an artist salon, a series of talks, gigs and performances responding to the theme of the first episode. Listings to follow shortly. About The Others: The Others is a multifunctional space rooted in the heart of N16, at the top of Stoke Newington's Church Street. We curate and host a diverse range of both emergent and established contemporary art. In addition to our exhibitions we hold an ongoing programme of events, from performances, film screenings and talks to gigs, club nights and residencies. We are here to represent and champion the others.
