Hilary Owers is a working artist who lives in rural Suffolk, and has had a studio at Cuckoo Farm Studios in Colchester, Essex for the past 17 years. She trained as a fine art print maker at Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design in London, and has focused on drawing in recent years.
Describing her working practice she says, "Drawing, for me, is an intuitive process, a very physical whole body activity that begins with no plan. In the studio I stand with the paper pinned against the wall. I begin with a mark, a line, a smudge, a gesture. As the marks add one to another, I constantly turn the paper disrupting progress, allowing the drawing to evolve organically as a response to the medium. With very large paper, sometimes up to 5 metres long, I draw with it on the floor, kneeling, reaching across, or walking around the paper back and forth, working from both sides. There are periods of nothing, just sitting, looking, then rapid bursts of activity trying not to think, just do".
Drawing more usually with charcoal and the sometime addition of other media, there is a tangible sense of freedom and energy both in her her large and smaller works. Sometimes as line becomes form, the subconscious evocation of a narrative may unfold. Alternatively, the outcome may take a more abstract pathway. Gradually, the work 'becomes'.
Hilary Owers achieved MA Fine Art at University of East London in 2001. Her work has been exhibited widely in London and the Eastern region, and in 2015 at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, in North Wales and at Black Swan Arts in Somerset.
As well as the drawings exhibited in The Gallery, two of Hilary's 5 metre long drawings will be displayed in the Project Space.
