Pioneer[03] is an interactive-fiction computer game prototype created by multi-disciplinary artist, Maki Yamazaki.
About
Navigating a science-fiction retelling of the 10th Century Japanese folktale, 'Taketori Monogatari', audiences are invited to make choices and shape the identity and personality of the protagonist as the story unfolds. Pioneer[03] is designed to exist beyond traditional gaming environments whilst exploring storytelling in creative ways for audiences to participate through focussed immersion and interactive play.
Combining original visual art, writing, music and computer programming Pioneer[03] seeks to create an experience that is accessible, entertaining and thought-provoking. It will invite audiences to play as a non-white, disabled protagonist, and features a rich cast including LGBTQAI+ characters and identities which are often poorly or under-represented across mainstream media.
The content portrays not power-fantasies all too common to popular games, but instead delicately explore themes of identity, agency, gender, fragility, and the nature of self.
Recommended for ages 12+, may contain strong language.
