In her solo exhibition in Berlin the British-Danish artist Lucy Farley takes you on a journey through the Deep South of America over to France, Great Britain and Denmark. What remains from her road trips are impressions and memories captured in vivid abstract paintings and works on paper.
We are delighted to present the exhibition Road Trip from Lucy Farley, the first solo exhibition from the British-Danish artist outside of Great Britain.
At the age of seven, Lucy Farley (* 1982) drove a circular tour of America with her parents, sitting in the back of a station wagon and covered 22 States, the impressions of the journey lingered long in her mind. Again and again, she returned in her thoughts to the places they visited, developing a special relationship with the multifaceted country. The result was an extended yearning and the urge to trace the uniqueness of places, landscapes and their people. Such longing continues to characterize Farley's works today and is concentrated in powerful yet sensitive abstract paintings and works on paper, in which the artist interweaves different printing techniques, collages and painterly elements.
In the summer of 2016, Farley travelled by car again through the southern United States and across to San Francisco. The Deep South was particularly inspiring and has had a stirring effect on the new series of paintings on paper. They form the heart of the current exhibition. In addition, the exhibition shows further recent works, all of which are equally inspired by travel: through France, Denmark, Britain and on the routes in between. “There is an obsessiveness to re-capture a City or a Landscape once I have left, a need to conjure the exact spirit, characters and atmosphere and a delight in the way the images evolve and become a permanent memory through paint.” To contrast these impressions on her memory with the collective image of the American road trip - strongly influenced by American cinema, photography and literature - offers a very special appeal for both the artist and ourselves.
