The 20th anniversary of a seminal series celebrating the first couples that inspired marriage equality in the UK.
About
Lucy Bell Gallery and Hastings Pride presents an exhibition of specially designed posters along the esplanade at St Leonards-on-Sea of Richard Ansett’s series 'Ron & Roger, 2001'
The couples photographed in the intimacy of their own homes,
are posed as if at the alter, inspired by the dutch masterpiece
by Jan Van Eyck, The Arnolfini Wedding.
20 years ago a new scheme called the London Partnership Register
was introduced to raise awareness of the inequities of civil rights for LGBTQ+ couples. Although not recognised in law, for the first time ALL relationships were celebrated regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
The brave couples that came forward, hugely influenced public opinion
and paved the way for the Civil Partnerships Act and eventually
the ‘Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013.
“Ansett’s images make an extremely powerful archive of modern lives” – Caroline Smith, Review Art”
