About

Prima Donna, from the Italian First lady, means solo female voice in musical and operatic terms, and is the starting point for Louise Giovanelli’s solo exhibition, which takes place after a period of residency at The International 3.

Developed out of an interest in classical musical terminology and how appreciation and interpretation is shaped through suggestions of how a piece of music should be played, i.e. Adagio meaning slow movement, restful at ease – this exhibition, by way of calculated lighting and hanging decisions, concerns modes of looking so as to suggest how a painting might be looked at, and subsequently experienced.

The starting point for each painting is a pre-existing historical aspect or detail, an interesting element or peculiarity, which then functions to provide coordinates, allowing an opportunity for re-imagination or re-appraisal. There is a sense of re-focusing and of re-framing. In this sense the painting is a camera, drawing attention to details that would otherwise be left overlooked, unexplored, or dismissed.

Prima Donna is co-commissioned by The International 3 and the University of Salford’s Commission to Collect Programme with work from the exhibition being acquired by University of Salford’s Art Collection. Concurrent with Prima Donna, Louise will also be exhibiting at Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool, where Part 2 of her two part exhibition, From Here to Here will run from 2nd July until 13th August. Louise’s third solo show of 2016, Slow to Respond will take place at Touchstones Rochdale from 19th November.
