Surface Gallery is delighted to present Lost Stories, a collaborative exhibition bringing together a cross-cultural visual response from four female artists.

About

Lost Stories explores issues of identity and its socio-political context, as well as varying perspectives of conscious and unconscious worlds. This culminates in a collection of 2D and 3D works, as well as multimedia installations. From tales of war and oppression, to a concern with the black female body and its movement through space, and an enquiry into the hidden world of the unconscious, the artists tell their stories.

Ponyiczki is a Hungarian artist now living and working in the UK. Ponyiczki explores the personal unconscious through the realm of dreams, presenting it in figurative dreamscapes and abstract dream-carpets, which develop into sculptural forms.

Nigerian- American artist Etukudo is an experimental storyteller. She recreates the relationship between her body’s physical movements in the world and its incorporeal movements as a result. The deconstruction of the known world and the act of the identity being the holder of dimension, challenges the modern constructs of how the black body can exist. This inserts the narrative of Afrofuturism and Afro-frequency as a source of black radical imagination and the root of the black magical experience.

Puskas is a Serbo-Croatian artist whose art practice addresses the issues of loss, memory and belonging that mark the unique historical chapter surrounding the civil war in former Yugoslavia. She presents a personal narrative that has developed through her experience of searching for identity and belonging through immediate exposure to the complex circumstances of war and loss.

Samhradháin’s practice explores the development of myth and folklore with the aim to create a narrative, supported by Heideggerian philosophical theory of, ‘Thrownness’. Born and raised in Northern Ireland during the 1970’s and 80’s, Una’s formative years were marred by experiences of oppressive political and belief systems. Through her art she seeks to throw off these conditions and seize hold of possibilities to tell her, “Lost Story”.

Artist Talk
