Lost in Transit

Studio Exhibition: Lost in Transit brings together thirteen of the most promising emerging photographers in the UK to explore themes of journeys, memory, and identity. The exhibition is the outcome of a nine-month long project, run by Redeye in association with Impressions Gallery, to help new talent develop their work and gain professional experience at one of the country's leading photography venues.

The photographers have responded in very different ways to the expression 'lost in transit', reflecting the diversity of approaches to contemporary photography. Roxana Allison's images explore her ambiguous feelings about her British-Mexican heritage, whilst Zuzana Salajkova returns to her grandmother's hometown in the Czech Republic, documenting the changes caused by Russian immigration to the area. Seba Kurtis also draws on his experiences as an immigrant, responding to stories of migrants in Egypt, the Canary Islands and the US.

Alison Stolwood's photographs and video depicting mountainous landscapes question the concept of 'wilderness', whilst Jill Cole documents the fragile existence of wild birds within a military training area. Murray Ballard and Helen Warburton examine ageing in different ways: Ballard documenting human preservation at a Russian cryonics facility near Moscow, and Warburton through a series of collaborative portraits of mothers and daughters.

Caitriona Dunnet's beautifully crafted images recall Victorian studio photography whilst Chris Nunn and Teresa Toms similarly use models to create fictitious and sometimes unsettling spaces. John Cuttriss' pinhole photographs of interiors are inspired by childhood memories, whilst Bella Wood uses Polaroids to explore her sense of place through records of everyday journeys. Debbie Harman, whose video work will be shown on the Bradford Big Screen, explores temporal and geographic dislocation via her experiences of motorway car crash and a journey through India.

The photographers were selected from a national submission and came from as far afield as Brighton and Cardiff to attend the programme of workshops on developing, promoting and presenting their work. The project was led by photographer A.J Wilkinson and run by Redeye in association with Impressions Gallery and is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
