In each story a person loses their life in the attempt to save the life of another; Amelia Kennedy dies trying to save her sister from their burning house, Edward Morris dies trying to save the life of his drowning companion and famed pantomime artiste, Sarah Smith, dies trying to save her colleague from an on-stage fire.
