London's Post-War Art Scene — David Bomberg and the Borough Group

This exhibition consists of works from The Sarah Rose Collection, the University collection, and works kindly loaned by Philip and Bob Richmond from Miles Richmond's Family Estate. It looks at the formation of the Borough Group and the period in which they worked with David Bomberg at Borough Polytechnic between 1946-1951. Borough Road and the environs of the Elephant and Castle were badly damaged by aerial bombardments and it was in a climate of austerity and rationing that Bomberg took up teaching again. The relatively short period of the existence of the Borough Group coincided with the process of economic reconstruction, in which Britain looked forward to a new period of peace and prosperity. The exhibition is organised around three themes: who the artists were, the environment of the University and Elephant and Castle, and the Life Painting class, and includes portraits, cityscapes and figure paintings, as well as video, photographs and texts that place these works within a broader social context.
