About

Mimesis or imitation seems hardwired into human behaviour. We learn by imitating; as children as much as adults we imitate to appropriate something. Learning a language is to imitate someone else's speech that we do not yet understand. We imitate the behaviour of our peers to be part of a group. Without this we could not communicate. We all do it, but it is not necessarily art. In Western art practice imitation became the defining concept within the discourse on art through Plato: art imitates the reality of objects but not the invisible 'ideas' (forms). Art creates illusions of objects which we cannot 'use'. Art thus is 'useless'.

Illusions are also untrue and therefore the art of illusion, just like the art of rhetoric, is not conducive to the good of society. What would we be without illusion? Would we be more or less deluded? Mime is also part of the experience of magic. By miming, the magician communicates with a spirit, commands the spirit to recount or explain a bad experience, or to exorcise it. The skill of the shaman is to become one with the spirit without remaining 'one'. Through imitation we become ourselves and the other. This alterity is learned by imitation.

When we begin imitating the believer and kneel down and pray we also begin to believe ourselves. Habits shape subjectivity. The magic realm is dominated by a mimetic practice which doesn't yet distinguish between the real and its copy. On the other hand, if imitation remains in the realm of fiction, it also maintains a distance from the reality we encounter.

This can give us the necessary space for a consideration of 'this' reality. It thereby gives access to the change of reality, providing us with the flexibility not only to adapt to (a changing) the external world, but also to find ways to express our inner world to one another. Fact and Fiction are both what is 'fabricated' by our mode of reason. In the end, we cannot escape our fabricating mind.

We may admire the skill of the artist in creating an illusion of 'some thing', which we 'recognize', despite the fact that we are already surrounded, to the point of madness, by masses of intrusive images, in advertising, TV, and on mobile phones - a relentless stream of communication designed to keep our attention and interest on the commodity.

We seem to be immersed in another world without the possibility of distinguishing illusion and reality, and the 'illusion' of art is drowned out completely. Imitating the popular pastime of appropriation (of public land for urban farming) this work fulfils the expectation of the image to capture and imitate the appearance of reality. Or more, the appropriation of that habit; I really do grow/produce cabbage, but only 'as if', in a gallery, where it should not be.

What is at stake, the habit, is not visible in the 'image': it is the fact of the appropriation itself, of something I do not own, the place where the growing takes place, the in-between, which is public and unused - the anarchy of the in-between which is too small to be regulated efficiently. Nevertheless, something is made. But is it real and not an image? It is only the image of the appropriation, and not a real appropriation of space, say the gallery, as I have been invited into this gallery, and for the allotted time have my allotment in it (there).

Maybe I only pretend this in order to temporarily occupy it as a field, a diagram of appropriation and mimetic parody. Maybe. The work also displays documents (images-illusions) of the original spaces, the in-between spaces, which are put to use to grow a produce, to make real food. Making itself useful is not how art operates, as it imitates appearances. (The image - s)Seeing - grasps and understands a practice of appropriation and utility, which is otherwise too close ('here') and therefore invisible, like the proverbial tree in the woods. Imitation creates the distance necessary to see things differently, like a different or unexpected caption under an old image.

This work remains within the in-between of the document, the image and the appropriation. It tries to 'grasp' rather than merely to imitate appearances. To 'grasp' is also to understand, to understand a reality through the distance created by 'imitation' and the relocation to the interstice between illusion and delusion. Art dwells in the in-between of the secured tenancy of expectations and the 'hard reality' of life. It hides in the in-between in order not to become too domesticated by living in the comfort of its tenancy. Only in its dis-location into the in-between where it is not at home, settled and appropriated as decoration, can it 'grasp' and translate the 'real' of reality. Artistic practice needs this movement of not being at home, of failure and futility.
