Liu Bolin is part of this generation of Chinese artists who are very sensitive to political, economic, social and environmental transformations of their country. With his series "Hiding in the City", starting in 2005, he became a national and international symbol, sometimes admired, sometimes controversial. in his new series The Hacker Series, Liu Bolin has hidden himself i institutional websites. He has taken away the original image to replace it with one of his. Barely visibly, the artist hides in those pictures. As the artist shares, 'in my latest solo show I explore what, in an era of intense virtualisation, remains real. Is what we see really what we get? With this new step, I am no longer the "invisible man", I am more an art whistleblower trying to raise the awareness of people about the power of images'.
In the recent months, Liu Bolin's work has been showed in museums around the world, the Museum of Contemporary art in Buenos Aires, the Centro Roberto Garza Sada in Monterrey, Mexico, the Boise Art Museum and the Dennos museum in the US, the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and is recognised all over the world as one of the leading photographers of his generation.
In addition to the Paris and Shanghai based Galleries Magda Danysz, the London Project is a new pop up gallery located on 61 Charlotte Street, just north of Soho and has quickly turned into one of the latest, dynamic contemporary art spaces in the heart of London, show casing some of the world’s most prolific, internationally acclaimed as well as emerging artists. Among them, Banksy, Blek Le Rat, Futura, Zhang Dali, Peikwen Cheng, Pure Evil, Remi Rough and Space Invader.
This is a temporary 100 day artistic residency project that has been hosting regular shows but also providing artists with the opportunity to work in the gallery's unique set of basements and vaults downstairs, which will ultimately transform the space into a unique collective body of art to be fully unveiled to the public at the end of the residency.
The chance to view Liu Bolin’s series of hacked and meticulously altered images will also include exclusive tours of the artistic residency downstairs.
