Little Boat of the Language is a visual iteration of language and translation through the practice of Atsuko Benten-Barouh.
About
Atsuko Barouh’s life has been shaped by different languages and cultures, always living on the edge of these have shaped her art and world perspective.
Translating between Japanese, French and English is a voyage, losing meaning and nuances, inventing new ones and transforming some along the way. Combining this with the logographic qualities of Chino-Japanese characters has been the genesis for Barouh’s body of work presented in Little Boat of the Language. The artworks presented in this solo exhibition combine the ancient art of Japanese calligraphy Shodō, language and translation along with Barouh’s poetic use of colour.
