Introduction

About

Ruffs, lace, bonnets and fur; ribbons, feathers and cuffs: past adornments of the privileged innocents. Then, as now, the child is ever eager to appear more adult, to grow into this world. As adults, we can only observe as life's subtle contaminating elements cast their shadows. The scaffolding of this reality has been in place for centuries and has manifested itself for every costume appropriate to its time. When these adornments are removed what is left is a timeless state of grace. These drawings are concerned with the universal child and continue pictorially to unravel the wonders and mysteries of childhood. The work exists in the slippages between time, paint and subject and speak of the liminal state of puberty and the loss of innocence. These are gently unsettling images, that pinch the viewer and reconnect them with a sense of the past and how it's shadows are cast on the present.
