About
In Stain Maker we see the artist’s continued interest in the body as a locus for transformation. Bodies themselves are stain makers: they grow, shed, discharge, regenerate, and decay over time. These bodily functions that appear in the exhibition mirror larger notions of creation and destruction, both within the body and the world around it.
A recurring motif across the work is the circle or spherical vessel, recalling everything from planetary arrays to wombs to electromagnetic currents. These round forms are in a state of flux: glowing, expelling, floating, deflating. The compositions shift and cycle between the corporeal and abstract, leaving us to wonder where the boundaries of the body begin or end. As Burke sees it, there is much to explore and define in the space between sensation and knowledge. How does one depict in visual terms the visceral feeling of blood pumping through your veins or your bladder emptying? How do you illustrate the experience of extreme pain or pleasure?
Burke’s process in her studio echoes her subject matter. As the title of the exhibition suggests, stain making refers to the body but just as easily applies to the act of painting or drawing. To stain is to leave a trace of yourself behind, a record of one’s self. Like the loops and cycles in her works on view, Burke’s process involves building up and breaking down her surfaces. In pieces like Full of Potential and Sad Fallopians, paint is applied, sanded down, applied again, then brushed, drizzled, and scrubbed. This process of accumulation also builds color and suffuses Burke’s paintings with glowing light, the final effect seeming at once bodily and cosmic.
Lindsay Burke (b. 1991) completed her BFA at The University of Iowa and her MFA at Hunter College.
