About

LIMINAL
SARA SHIELDS

July 04 TO 14, 2018
Opening Reception: Friday, July 6, 6 - 8 PM

The Red Head Gallery is pleased to present our summer non-member exhibition, Liminal by artist, Sara Shields.

LIMINAL
(adj.)
1. Relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process
2. Occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold

For nearly a decade, Sara Shields’ vivid, metaphorical drawings have encouraged viewers to connect with their subconscious and open themselves to inner reflection. Shields’ artistic expression takes the form of dynamic, alien-like figures born of the artist’s lived experiences, interactions and emotions. Over the course of the past year, a new understanding of life’s inherent integrity and cohesiveness has shifted the artist’s perspective, allowing her a new creative freedom untethered to the menial realities of the day-to-day.

In Liminal, her solo show of works on paper at The Red Head Gallery, Shields has chosen to showcase a selection of drawings that follows her trajectory out of an emotionally stagnant period in 2017 to the sense of anticipation, of being on the threshold of something new and unique, that infuses her most recent drawing, from which the exhibition is titled.

These drawings are deliberately presented unframed. By eliminating the spatial boundary of the frame, Shields offers you an opportunity to respond to each individual work as something still in the process of becoming; and to the whole exhibition as an unfinished narrative flow. She wants you to become aware of the constraints of your comfort zone, and welcome the exhilarating freedom that comes with breaking down personal barriers and embracing the uncertainty that accompanies change.

Listen to the narrative; step across the threshold.
