‘what the water gave me’ is Lily Rigby’s second solo show at ONCA Gallery.

About

Lily’s new paintings explore the power of water – a universal symbol for change. At a time when the world needs to change to tackle the effects of global warming, Lily’s work reminds us that new tides can bring in new beginnings.

The exhibition will be open until 17th November and the Private view will take place on the 9th November 1-5pm.

Lily began the work for this exhibition whilst she was on an Art Residency in Cornwall earlier this year. She spent every day walking by the sea and since coming home to Brighton she has continued to spend a lot of time by water – watching it, swimming in it and listening to it. She has been photographing the points where land and water meet and the marks that are left behind when the tides change. Lily has been capturing the feeling and atmosphere of water and researching the history of colours within painting too and what they symbolise; the colour green is calming and can make people stay a while in front of your work.

Since April this year, Lily has kept all of her work private and off social media. So these new paintings will be seen for the first time at ONCA Gallery this November.

“I have always been drawn to the water. I love how it is always changing and always moving. The tides feel like a new chance for the old to be washed away and then they bring in something new…. Time disappears when I paint. I think my paintings come from the subconscious part of me, all of my experiences and emotions, all seem to come out and onto the canvas. I love how painting is so instant…the marks are there on the canvas before you can judge them or change them.” – Lily Rigby

All visitors are warmly welcomes to the private view, where all the work is for sale. There will be delicious canapés by Rosa Rigby and Drinks by Jarrolds Gin.

Lily will be donating a portion of all gallery sales to Surfers Against Sewage – a charity that helps protect our oceans and the wildlife that live there.
