Lightworks 2012

About

LIGHTWORKS 2012 Lightworks is a spectacular one-night international festival of film, sound and new media in Grimsby, and is organised by staff and students from Grimsby Institute's HE creative courses. This will be the third Lightworks annual event and will take place on Friday March 16th between 6pm and 10pm, with multiple projections and screens in and around Grimsby Minster. Lightworks has linked up with two additional venues: Abbey Walk Gallery, which will be showing video work by local artists, and a selection of work chosen from last year's Lightworks event, and the Gate Gallery which will have sound work and a large scale video projection. This year is an exciting time for Lightworks as it is the first time we have commissioned new work. There will be three new pieces in animation, sound and video: Ӣ Sheffield artist Michael Day is making an animation conveying his mixed feelings when visiting Norwegian fjords in Trondheim. The anticipated romantic beauty of the fjords was disordered by confrontation with the everyday reality of viewpoints pre-selected for visitors. Ӣ London based artist and radio producer Magz Hall is developing a version of her piece Radio Mind. This is a sculptural installation of small bird radios playing a transmission of words and music, inspired by the overlap that a group of early twentieth century clerics found between the paranormal and their Christian beliefs, and exploiting the still slightly discomforting idea that sound can be transmitted through air. Ӣ Israeli performance artist and film-maker Shahar Marcus will be making a film called 'Landmine' for Lightworks 2012. Shahar's work is a mixture of beautiful imagery, direct, powerful narrative and a finely-tuned sense of the absurd. His treatment of subjects is subtle and indirect.
