About

East Quay is delighted to present Lifescape, an new exhibition by artist, Alice Ladenburg, running from May 24 to August 31, 2025. Through an innovative blend of art and science, Lifescape explores human perception, navigation, and interconnectedness with the natural world. Lifescape immerses visitors in a large-scale video installation that transports them through key landscapes across Exmoor and West Somerset. Created with support from a multidisciplinary team, the work combines high-tech LiDAR scanning (in partnership with Wageningen University, Netherlands), filmed footage, and an evocative soundscape. Ethereal ‘pointcloud’ scans blend with macro-views, guiding audiences through Somerset’s temperate rainforests, rugged coastline, ancient sites, and post-industrial landscapes. Accompanied by site recordings and diverse voices, the film offers insights into the region’s ecological and cultural past, present, and potential future. The exhibition highlights five key locations: the Somerset coastline, Horner Woods, Culbone Wood & Church, a permaculture farm, Bat’s Castle, and a section of the Mineral Line in the Brendon Hills. Each site is rich in geological and historical significance, interwoven into a visually and sonically striking narrative. Beyond the video installation, Lifescape extends into an interactive display featuring natural samples collected from these landscapes. Ladenburg presents drawings, reference materials, and natural pigments derived from Somerset’s distinctive geology, fostering a deeper engagement with the land.Through the fusion of technology, research, and artistic practice, Lifescape encourages us to reconsider how we see, listen to, and interact with the non-human world. This exhibition is supported by: Mondriaan Fund, CBK Rotterdam, and Wageningen University.
