Leonard von Matt (1909–1988) was one of the most successful Swiss photographers from 1950 to the mid-1970s.

About

He became known for his photographs on the art and architecture of the Etruscans, Greeks and Romans as well as the collections of important museums (including Musei Vaticani Roma, Musée Guimet Paris). His early work, however, includes a hauntingly idiosyncratic portrait of the Central Swiss canton of Nidwalden, its people and local culture. Leonard von Matt was a bookseller, publisher and antiquarian. He autodidactically cultivated his photographic craft from 1937 and dealt intensively with the works of Paul Senn, Jakob Tuggener, Got- thard Schuh, Man Ray and Herbert Matter. His enormous work would not have come about without the active cooperation of his wife and daughter.
