Leader in Me is a group show exhibiting self-portraits of Public School 147’s fifth grade students created with NURTUREart’s 2017-2018 artist-in-residence at P.S.147, Walter Cruz.

About

Focusing on the medium of collage, students create portraits of themselves both through ripped paper and found images. Through the process of creating their self portraits, fifth graders consider how pictures, objects and colors might represent and relate to the thoughts and feelings true of their own human experience.

During the 2017- 2018 school year, students of P.S. 147 focus on what leadership looks like in their classroom, school and community at large. Part of leadership involves creative decision making. As students made choices about the cut and placement of each piece, they reflected on how each decision contributes to the make up of the entire composition.

A native New Yorker, Walter Cruz is a Bronx-based artist who focuses on making work that inspires Black and Latinx people. Cruz utilizes the intersections of art and design to create moments of critical thinking. When not painting or creating physical art work, Cruz spends time as one of the core graphic designers for the Black Lives Matter network as well as freelance designing for clients that range from small local businesses to large companies and universities. In a world that is constantly telling Black and Latinx people that they do not matter, Cruz intends to continue creating work that uplifts the very same people.
