Le Cabinet Du Chameau De Cactus is an exhibition of curios from Xerxes Smith
About
Lockdown Gallery are proud to present an epic collection of curiosities and bizarre oddities by artists worldwide collected by Xerxes Zanzibar Vivacious Smith form his recent travels.
Part 1 consists of hundreds of diverse and strange art collectables, some rather macabre and others comical, mostly made from found objects and trash. Much of the work would be consider outsider art or lowbrow. Smith has long been a champion of this aesthetic and promoting the voices of the unheard. Reguarding their contribution to the art world as valid as fine art.
In a novel exhibition, which also sees the show acting as a genuine functioning gift shop, the artist gets to examine the monetary value of art in practice as pure gift form in this dominant capitalist society as he sells off his collection. This in turn challenges the audience to consider the difference between fine art and craft.
Xerxes collection also explores the current rise of false truth and fake news angainst the beautiful ancient art of pure story telling.
This is expressed through extracts from his forthcoming travel journal book that accompanies the commentary on the opening night.
