Anhand der auditiven Wahrnehmung ver- folgt der Künstler Spuren von staatlicher oder industrieller Gewalt sowie Mechanismen der Überwachung und Propaganda. Der Hamburger Bahn- hof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin widmet dem Gewinner des Baloise Kunst-Preis 2018 eine Einzelpräsentation, in deren Mittelpunkt die Video- und Soundinstallation „This whole time there were no landmines“ (2017) steht. Das Werk beschäftigt sich auf eindringliche Weise mit physischen und emotionalen Grenzen und wurde im Rahmen der Auszeichnung für die Sammlung der Nationalgalerie angekauft.

Das filmische Material der aus acht gegenüberliegenden quadratischen Bildschirmen bestehenden Installation bilden Handyaufnahmen, die wäh- rend Protesten und der erstmaligen Grenzüberschreitung am 15. Mai 2011 auf den Golanhöhen entstanden sind, einem hügeligen Landstrich im Nahen Osten, der in der Vergangenheit Gegenstand verschiedener Konflikte war und seit 1967 zum überwiegenden Teil unter israelischer Besatzung steht. Aufgrund der besonderen Akustik wurde eine Stelle des Landstrichs als „shouting valley“ bekannt. Die Topografie ermöglicht eine Kommunikation mit Megaphonen über die Grenze hinweg und war vor der Verbreitung von Mobiltelefonen wichtig für die bei der Grenzziehung ge- trennten Familien der arabischen Religionsgemeinschaft der Drusen.
Zwei weitere Arbeiten ergänzen die Ausstellung: In „Conflicted Phone-mes“ (2012) und „Disputed Utterance“ (2019) beschäftigt sich Abu Hamdan mit Sprachanalysemethoden im Zusammenhang mit internatio- nalen Gerichts- und Asylverfahren. Abu Hamdan, der als Research Fellow und Klangexperte mit Forensic Architecture zusammenarbeitet, war in den letzten Jahren auf den Biennalen von Gwangju, Sharjah und zuletzt Ve- nedig vertreten und ist in diesem Jahr für den Turner Prize nominiert.

The audiovisual and installation works by Lawrence Abu Hamdan (*1985 Amman, Jordan) address the political dimensions of language and com- munication. On the basis of auditory perception, the artist follows traces of state or industrial violence as well as mechanisms of surveillance and propaganda. The Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin dedicates a solo exhibition to the winner of the Baloise Art Prize 2018. The video and audio installation “This whole time there were no landmines” (2017) is at the center of the presentation. The work deals with physical and emotional boundaries in a haunting way and was purchased as part of the prize for the collection of the Nationalgalerie.

Shown on eight opposite square screens, the film and audio footage of the installation consists of mobile phone recordings taken during protests and the very first border crossing on May 15, 2011 in the Golan Heights, a rocky plateau region in the Middle East that had been the subject of vari- ous conflicts in the past. Israel annexed most of the Golan Heights in 1967. Due to the special acoustics, part of the region became known asthe “shouting valley.” The topography enables communication with mega- phones across the border and was important for the families of the Arab religious community of the Druze, even more so in the days before mobile phones. Two further works complete the exhibition: In “Conflicted Pho- nemes” (2012) and “Disputed Utterance” (2019), Abu Hamdan explores language analysis methods in connection with international court and asy- lum procedures. Abu Hamdan, who works with Forensic Architecture as a research fellow and sound expert, has been featured at key biennials in recent years, from Gwangju to Sharjah to Venice. This year he has been nominated for the Turner Prize.
