In “The sun, the fog, the pink, the gold – for me”, Laura Edmunds explores the primacy of existence through drawing. Inspired by Yevgeny Zamyatin’s dystopian fiction, We, she is concerned with the confliction of material/immaterial, visible/invisible and ultimately, life/death binaries entrenched in modern life. Reflecting on the idea that we attempt to control existence by creating structures, boundaries and systems of governance, Laura has developed a series of drawn marks as signifiers and methods of alluding to thiscollective inner turmoil. Asserting ones corporeality through drawing involves a desire to understand the subconscious, internal question, ‘what am I?’ - interpreting the gestural immediacy of the drawn mark as a method of creating evidence; leaving traces of physicality. This physicality communicates seeing, breathing, moving, touching; being alive.

Considering the drawn mark as a method of searching for meaning, Laura is concerned with the ability of drawing to communicate intention and movement, loss and stillness. She creates drawings that convey corporeal ambivalence and the elusive nature of existing as a human being. The marks drawn are purposely ambiguous, exploring structure and boundaries amongst the mimicry of bodily traces and the expulsion of breath. There are no illusions in drawing; its secrets, desires and ideas are worn on its sleeve. The works subtly communicate a slippage between a world of reason and pragmatics, and that of primal instinctivism.

Born in 1989, Laura Edmunds is a Welsh visual artist based in Plymouth, United Kingdom. In 2011, she graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Surface Pattern: Contemporary Applied Art from Swansea Metropolitan University, Wales. Receiving the 2011 Jane Phillips Award from Mission Gallery, based in Swansea and the 2012 Drawing Prize from the Welsh Artist of the Year awards in Cardiff, Laura was able to continue her postgraduate studies in Australia. She completed a Master of Art degree with Distinction at Curtin University in July 2014, and is currently lecturing at Plymouth College of Art and developing her artistic practice.

Wedi'i ysbrydoli gan 'We', ffuglen dystopaidd gan Yevgeny Zamyatin mae "The sun, the fog, the pink, the gold - for me" gan Laura Edmonds yn archwilio uchafiaeth bodolaeth drwy arlunio. Mae gan Laura ddiddordeb mewn gwrthdrawiad o defnydd/ansylwedd, gweledig/anweledig, ac yn y pen draw bywyd/marwolaeth ddeuol sydd wedi'i amgloddio yn yr oes gyfoes. Yn adlewyrchu ar y syniad ein bod ni'n trio rheoli bodolaeth drwy greu trefn, ffiniau a systemau o lywodraeth, mae Laura wedi creu cyfres o farciau fel dulliau o gyferio at yr aflonyddwch mewnol cyfunol yma. Mae mynnu corfforoldeb drwy arlunio yn golygu yr awydd i ddeall yr isymwybod, y cwestiwn mewol - 'beth ydw i?' - a dehongli'r uniongyrchedd ystumol o'r marc fel dull o greu tystiolaeth, gan adael olion corfforol sy'n cysylltu gweld, anadlu, symud, cyffwrdd; byw a bod.

Mae gan Laura ddiddordeb yng ngallu arlunio i gyfathrebu bwriad a symudiad, colled a llonyddwch, gan ystyried y marc gweledol fel dull o chwilio am fwriad. Mae hi'n creu lluniau sy'n cyfleu amwyster corfforol a'r natur anniffiniol o fodoli fel bod dynol. Mae'r marciau yma wedi eu llunio'n amwys yn bwrparsol, gan archwilio trefn a ffiniau ymhlith y dynwarediad o olion corfforol a'r allwthiad anadl. Nid oes twyll na lledrith mewn arlunio; mae'r cyfrinachau, awyddau a syniadau yno i'w gweld. Mae'r gwaith yn cysylltu llithriant rhwng dau fyd; un rhesymol ac un o reddf cyntefig.

Fe ganwyd Laura Edmonds yn 1989 ac mae'r artist gweledol bellach wedi sefydlu yn Plymouth, DU. Fe astudiodd y Gymraes ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe ac fe raddiodd yn 2011 gyda BA (Anrh) yn y pwnc 'Surface Pattern'. Fe dderbyniodd Wobr Jane Phillips 2011 gan Mission Gallery, Abertawe ynghyd â gwobr arlunio gan wobrau Artist y Flwyddyn 2012 yng Nghaerdydd. Galluogodd y gwobrau hyn i Laura barahu gyda'i hastudiadau ôl-raddedig yn Awstralia. Yno, ym Mhrifysgol Curtin fe gwblhaodd MA gyda rhagoriaeth. Mae Laura bellach yn darlitho yng ngholeg Plymouth College of Art ac yn gweithio fel arlunydd.
