For the exhibition Late Night Supermarket Shopping Live, Helen Benigson creates a bright and pulsating space, filled with performance, video and printed image. Exploiting the facades of digital culture and the language of online games, animation and communication platforms, Benigson repetitively enacts the blurring of boundaries between actor, producer and spectator. Her work discloses an obsession in reference to food and supermarket as a play on the body, contemporary identity and femininity. The negotiation of such contexts unfolds as part of a performance within the space of the screen. Concerned with current biology and advancements in technologies to trigger desire or appetite, sexy images, together with immersive, fictitious landscapes create a highly visceral environment in between reality and the virtual. Helen Benigson (b.1985, lives and works in London) is an artist and rapper. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, graduated with first class honours in 2009, and completed her MA in 2011. Benigson participated in the LUX Associate Artist Program in 2011-2012. Recent solo exhibitions include Going to Africa via a Machine Called a Sunbed, at Meantime Project Space, Cheltenham, UK (2014); Performa 13, New York, US (2013); Palm Trees and Poker Players at UCA, Farnham, UK (2012) and The Future Queen of the Screen, ROLLO Contemporary Art, London (2011/2012).
