Lars Bjerre. New painting and installation

»The Robbery, 1914« is based on a fictional narrative set a few weeks before the outbreak of World War I when three men decide to commit a momentous theft. They plan to rob three crown jewels: the Prussian Hohenzollern Crown, the British St. Edward's Crown, and the Russian Tsar's Crown - the property of the three cousins of Kaiser Wilhelm II, King George V, and Tsar Nicholas II. This mad yet successful act deprives the monarchs not only of their symbols of power but also of their political significance. Thus the robbers rewrite history.

Bjerre takes this robbery as the thematic starting point for the exhibition. In paintings and ceramics he deconstructs the fictional narrative. Each work is immersed in the details, accessories and actions of the plot whilst these scenic elements are reassembled in an unusual manner. Bjerre creates snapshots and situations which, like a storyboard, tell the story through individual still images. The interiors, with their heavy green wallpaper and colorful windows, are given just as much attention as the robbers’ disguises, their equipment and their heist: the polished crowns – whose untouchable symbolical effect on political power structures, sovereignty and wealth are staged as a tragic-comedy in this exhibition.
