The Brick Lane Gallery is proud to present our LANDSCAPE; RURAL VS URBAN exhibition. Focusing on the portrayal of scenic views, the exhibition explores the variety in styles and approaches taken by contemporary artists in this particular genre.

About

From mountains, forests, coastal views and seascapes to skyscrapers, suburban views and cityscapes we are taken through a journey exploring our different surroundings and our interaction with them. The spaces depicted may be that of a real place, or it may be an imaginary or idealized view but they are all inviting scenes that pull us into exploring and becoming part of them.

Casey Lance Brown explores contemporary landscapes, through her newest edition of real estate speculation series. He examines Miami and its ongoing property bubble. Condominiums, hi-rises, and other vertical luxury properties are sprouting up as safe-haven investments from Latin America, appearing almost giddy in their speed and vertiginous growth. “Inside the Bubble II” foregrounds this process by juxtaposing the shiny, just-built tower glaring over the next-in-line parcel which is the most expensive in Miami history. Each stands like a blind sentinel, ignorant of the billowing asset bubble and impending bursting. She explores the idea of “what goes up, must come down”. On the other hand, we are confronted with the exploration of nature’s beauty as memory through Sholto Blissett’s works. The  paintings presented, seek to capture the numinous sense of landscape and are creations solely from the memory of specific Scottish panoramas and imagination. Suspended between reality and myth, they are alchemical evocations of the elemental boundaries between earth, air and water, and of the immutable periphery between reality and fantasy, the present and the past, the individual and the external natural world.

You are warmly welcome to join us for a drink with the artists at the opening night of LANDSCAPE; RURAL VS URBAN at The Brick Lane Gallery – The Annexe open from 6pm-8.30pm on Wednesday 2nd September 2015.
