About
Lakeland in Lettering: Words across the fells is a new exhibition of Lakeland writings, quotations and Cumbrian dialect poems, by Eden Valley Scribes.
Included in the show are framed exhibits, some relating to Herdwick sheep, together with a representation of a Cumbrian dry stone wall, incorporating words and sayings on the stones.
This well-established group of calligraphers draws members from all areas of Cumbria and meets monthly in Penrith sharing ideas and welcoming professional calligraphers who run lettering workshops, introducing a wide range of styles and processes to the group.
The Eden Valley Scribes, which currently comprises fourteen members, was formed in 1996. The aim of the group is to promote, foster and educate in the art of calligraphy and lettering. The members who reside throughout the
county meet locally in Penrith on the second Saturday of each month (excluding July and August). The meetings comprise in-house and external workshops at which professional calligraphers attend and impart their knowledge on specialist themes. Workshops have included all aspects of script, including: Impetuous Italics, Modern Gothic, Lombardic Versals, Uncial,
Watercolour washes, Sacred Geometry, Embossing and Layout and design.
