About

A new public art commission celebrating the rich history of lace making in Bedford. Large scale hand-made lace adorns the exterior of 1 St Paul's Square, an unoccupied Grade 2 listed Georgian building in Bedford town centre. Artist Arabel Rosillo de Blas has been working with local group The Aragon Lacemakers, learning to make lace and designing patterns for the installation, which uses motifs and stitches found in traditional Bedfordshire lace. The work evokes a sense of loss, not only for the art of lace making itself, but also for the building. Once elegant and opulent, it now lies derelict, in a state of gradual decay. Through a series of public events and workshops Arabel has brought together a dedicated team of local people who have played a crucial role, along with The Aragon Lacemakers, completing the mammoth task of turning three miles of rope into the fourteen large scale lace panels needed to cover the exterior of the building. Public installation 5th May 2012 to 28th February 2013 Location 1 St Paul's Square, Bedford
