“The Marvellous Machine” project is a series of human anatomy drawings to honour the great master himself, Leonardo da Vinci, on the 500th anniversary of his death.

About

The Untitled Factory Gallery is delighted to present “La Machine Merveilleuse”, a solo exhibit of drawings by Maria Kuzma-Kuzniarska. “The Marvellous Machine” project is a series of human anatomy drawings to honour the great master himself, Leonardo da Vinci, on the 500th anniversary of his death. Da Vinci’s journey as an anatomy illustrator started out as preparation for his artistic work but soon turned into a deep scientific inquiry, that resulted in hundreds of beautifully rendered scientific illustrations showing amazing anatomical detail.

”The Marvellous Machine” series features anatomically correct drawings of the human body through the eyes of modern day artist and biologist, Maria Kuzma-Kuzniarska, PhD. The series uses a selection of da Vinci’s illustrations and reinterprets them but, most importantly, it extends the scope of da Vinci’s anatomy research, introducing the aspects of gender, race and aging, as well as depicting some pathological conditions. The series draws upon Maria’s personal artistic practice and her interest in how bodies evolve over time.

”The Marvellous Machine” drawings mostly concentrate on human morphology, often showing bodies unidealised but in a subtle and poetic way, hence making the anatomy less scientific and more approachable. The portrayed subjects are slightly mysterious, arousing interest, maybe even lust. They have a story to tell and show complicated emotions which makes them feel alive, similar to the ones in da Vinci’s own illustrations.

Vernissage: 7th November 2019, from 7pm
Exhibition: 7th - 23rd November 2019, Tuesday to Saturday, from 4pm to 8pm

About the artist:
Maria’s personal work is deeply grounded in her background as a biomedical illustrator. Her artistic work has developed from a fascination with human form and her in-depth knowledge of human anatomy. The anatomical correctness of the human form is of great importance to her and can be observed throughout her work. Maria’s work has previously been exhibited in both France and the UK. She is a founder of the Life Drawing Montmartre.
