About
“The advantage of an island is that you can walk around, but what is even more valuable is that this tour is endless. And let’s consider that most of the world’s islands make archipelago with others.” - Édouard Glissant, From the Whole-World Treatise
This exhibition results from a questioning initiated by the students of ESAD Valence Research & Creation workshop (entitled “The School of an Art Center”) on the notion of common space: these young artists propose a project conducted especially for La Halle des bouchers – from the choice of works to their spatialization, within a curatorial and narrative layout.
Starting from the characteristics of the site and its specific environment, the wish to amplify dialogues between indoor and outdoor has emerged: in making its own borders porous, the Art Center is therefore thought as a place of experiences and encounters, which could be described as a “dynamic platform”.
Borrowed from Edouard Glissant, the title “La houle et le ressac” [Swell and Surf] refers to the idea of confrontation and interdependence. The inseparable link of space and time in this swell and surf incessant movement led to conceive temporality as a territory to be occupied. With variations, the exhibition time will be punctuated by actions producing and nurturing encounters with the audience.
