Herrick Gallery is proud to present two London based artists who both explore and reference the importance of the artists’ studio and the influence this environment and its contents have over the scale, material and imagery in each of their work.

About

Kostas Synodis converted a windowless cupboard into a makeshift studio and has installed a replica of this tiny studio in the basement of the gallery. Kostas’ small-scale works and the sensations of constriction and compression in his subtle manipulation of materials, reflect his circumstances in London. By challenging the authenticity of our visual perception, Kostas' works have a conspicuous presence with the qualities of a practical joke and a more serious reflection on our material awareness. Kostas Synodis was born in 1984 in Greece. He graduated from the University of Westminster in 2013 with a degree in mixed media fine arts. He currently lives and works in London and is presented here in association with Julian Page & Joanna Bryant.

Jake Clark’s paintings are based on collages and models made from detritus found in his studio. Photographs of these structures then become the reference material for the paintings. The “flower” became the starting point for this series of images. Jake’s interest is in pushing one image on top of another so the picture space becomes twisted. The scale is also meant to be ambiguous by suggesting architecture or toys, emphasised by the lighting aiming to create an eerie quality. Jake Clark was born in 1966 in London. He studied painting at Brighton and the Royal College of Art, completing his MA in 1993. He lives and works in London.
