TENDERPIXEL presents Vorsprung durch Technik, the first exhibition in London for the prolific artist group Konsortium: Lars Breuer (b 1974 Aachen DE), Sebastian Freytag (b 1978 Hanover DE), and Guido Münch (b 1966 Essen DE) all based in Düsseldorf and Cologne DE.
What is the âcorrect' way to operate within the art world? Konsortium endeavours to answer this question decisively. Their roles as individual artists, as a collective, as an eight-year artist-run gallery, or as a curatorial laboratory are equivalent and indistinct. Alongside their individual careers, their collaboration results in diverse activity beyond the sum of its parts, fuelling their personal objectives while establishing a sort of global ecosystem composed of artist peers with similar interests.
In Vorsprung durch Technik, an attempt is made to represent the fluidity of these functions. The upper gallery comprises a collaborative wall drawing overlaid with individual works by Breuer, Freytag, and Münch; while downstairs they present their first-ever collaborative video installation. An offsite project, reconstituting the Konsortium project space in London, will occur later this year.
Founded in 2002, following overlapping studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Konsortium was best known for their project space on the then-unfashionable east side. After seventy-five exhibitions, the gallery shut in 2010, yet continues to organize exhibitions and produce new work worldwide.
Their solo exhibitions include Golden Dream Construction, House of Art, àŠeské Budàâºjovice CZ (2013); Spaceinvader, Karst, Plymouth UK (2012); exit open sale, Schau Ort, Zürich CH (2011); Mastercopy, Pori Art Museum, Pori FI (2010); Neueröffnung, Museum Folkwang, Essen (2010); Rot, SNO Centre, Sydney AU (2009); Schwarz, RMIT Gallery, Melbourne AU (2009); Eurostyle, The Suburban, Chicago US (2009); and Et in arcadia ego, Hebel121, Basel CH (2008).
Konsortium have participated in group exhibitions at Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen DE (2010); Kunstverein St. Pauli, Hamburg DE (2009); and Museum Neue Kunst/ZKM, Karlsruhe DE (2008).
In addition to their former project space (2004-10), Konsortium have organised group exhibitions at Sydney College of the Arts (2009), a joint exhibition at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and Kunst im Tunnel (2007), and are in preparations for Dystotal, a two-part curatorial project for the Pori Art Museum (2014) and the Ludwig-Forum, Aachen DE (2015).
