In a 13-week online program, the KINO SIEMENSSTADT series explores how the issues of space and architecture are reflected in the field of artist film and video.

About

How does contemporary art translate the history and stories of the city into moving images and to what extent can it continue the current discourse on (historical) architecture, even and especially if the intention goes beyond the purely documentary.

The title KINO SIEMENSSTADT refers to the former film theater at Nonnendammallee 96 in the immediate vicinity of SCHARAUN - interdisciplinary project space for art and architecture. As one of two cinemas in Siemensstadt from 1931 to 1962, it was one of the few entertainment options for Siemens workers and their relatives. Today, no more films are shown here. Like so many cinemas, it had to give way to another purpose, today the textile discount store KIK offers its goods there. The story, the threat, perhaps even the demise of the movie theater has not been told since Corona. The cinemas had previously complained of a blatant drop not only in the number of visitors but also in high-quality films. The shutdown in the past few weeks seems to reinforce the trend:

But also the art scene and last but not least SCHARAUN with KINO SIEMENSSTADT, pushed by access restrictions to the real exhibition rooms and the no longer existing cinemas, opens up for new experimental fields in order to explore the extent to which art presentation on the Internet in the form of a simulated cinema is possible. The moving image - artist film and video - seems to be particularly suitable here since the consumer has become increasingly used to streaming services in recent years. The question that still needs to be answered: does this really work in an art context?

Jaro Straub, head of the SCHARAUN project space, invited Olaf Stüber to put together a series of programs with him, with a focus - it stands to reason - on architecture and the city. The series begins on Friday May 29th at 6pm with two films by Anri Sala. The film "Long Sorrow" from 2005, filmed on the 18th floor of a residential building in the Märkisches Viertel in Berlin, forms a cinematic line of sight to the modern settlement architecture in Berlin-Siemensstadt, in whose rooms SCHARAUN is located. The films will be available online at www.scharaun.de for 6 days before the countdown to the next program begins.

Films by Amie Siegel, Dani Gal, Andy Graydon, Shingo Yoshida, Anja Kirschner & David Panos, Sophie Nys, Filipa César, Knut Klaßen & Carsten Crohn, Korpys / Löffler, Nina Könnemann and many more will follow weekly until the end of August. At the end of August, SCHARAUN will again show a selection of the works shown online in the “real” room. Both in their own rooms, in the Siemensstadt information station and at other locations, the experiences of the past few weeks should be reflected against the background of a presentation with the public, a shared view and the direct opposite of the work and the recipient.
