Based on Korean lyricism, Kim Whanki led globalization of Korean contemporary art as the frontier of Korean abstract art.

About

After participating as a Korean representative artist at the 7th Sao Paulo Biennale in 1963, Kim Whanki moved to New York and perfected abstract dot paintings through the use of pure geometric elements—line, surface and dot.

Celebrating the 45th anniversary of GALLERY HYUNDAI, this special exhibition includes 22 works that focus on Kim Whanki’s abstract works ranging from 1960s to 1974, the year he passed away. Made during his stay in New York, the works included in the exhibition consist of early New York period works closely associated with time and sound; cross compositions that experiment with picture plane by dividing the surface with lines; and dot paintings made with numerous colorful dots.

Beginning with Kim Whanki’s first solo exhibition Kim Whanki Retrospective 1954-1970 in 1977, GALLERY HYUNDAI held WHANKI 1963-1970 in 1982, Kim Whanki Retrospective 20th Anniversary in 1994, Kim Whanki Memorial 25th Anniversary in 1999, and a large scale Kim Whanki retrospective in 2012. This exhibition will be 11th solo exhibition of Kim Whanki by GALLERY HYUNDAI.
