About

Kim Baker's new series of paintings are part of an ongoing journey, an exploration of the genres of landscape and abstraction. The paintings have three elements working together; the graphic yet painterly skies, the gestural landscape and the abstract floral forms. These floral forms are the protagonists in the paintings and provide a humanist element with the traditional palette of the landscapes creating contrast and tension. The more formally painted skies give the works a sense that you are standing at the edge of the world about to be plunged down into an abyss. If you walk to the edge of the sky, how far will you fall on the other side? Where do these paintings lead the viewer to? There is a feeling of nostalgia of a land that time forgot, of something about to happen. Despite the seemingly bright playful floral protagonists, there is a feeling of melancholy, of all the seasons and time blurred into one, leaving a feeling of uncertainty, of timelessness of another place. Influences include the Baroque paintings of Murillo, the landscapes of David Bomberg and Howard Hodgkin, and the poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Kim Baker graduated with a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree from Birmingham University. She has exhibited widely, including group and solo exhibitions and art fairs in London, Newcastle, Reykjavik and New York, and in 2009 she completed a residency at the Signy and Olaf Willums Art Foundation in France. Private and public collectors of Kim Baker's paintings include Birmingham University, Whitbread Group plc and Midland Arts Centre, and the Four Seasons Hotel, St. Petersburg. Her work has been featured in Art Monthly, Time Out and S Magazine, and is due to be included in the Thames & Hudson book, Nature Morte: Contemporary Artists Reinvigorate the Still Life Tradition by Michael Petry, due for release in late 2013. Please join us at the private view of Twilight, where Kim Baker will be in attendance and talking in depth about her work, and be one of the first to view this new exhibition.
