An Exhibition By Hanna Tuulikki

About

In her Exhibition Kensington Cradle Songs, Glasgow based artist Hanna Tuulikki will use sound installation and drawing to explore the role of song in contemporary human relationships.

Kensington is an area in North Liverpool that is home to a diverse range of cultural communities. During October Hanna will be asking residents from in and around Kensington to share with her 'cradle songs' which they may have sung to their children or that they remember from their own childhood. These songs will be recorded and developed into an exhibition to take place at The Bridewell Studios Gallery.

Traditionally a song that a mother sings to a child would be known as a lullaby and would contain certain key elements like a slow and lilting beat. Although the country of origin may vary, lullabies are often strikingly similar across cultures, providing a means of communicating that surpasses language and relies on the melody, rhythm and vibration of the music itself.

For her first exhibition in Liverpool, Hanna will present an immersive sound installation and a new vocal composition that will explore the ongoing relevance of sound as a universal method of communication in a contemporary multicultural society.

Hanna Tuulikki is an artist and musician based in Glasgow. Using various forms of performance, sound, video, drawing and publication she explores music not as an end in itself but as part of the wider environmental soundscape. Recent public art works include 'Nest' as part of 'See Eye' in Abbeyview, Dunfermline and 'Airs of the Sea' exhibition at the Stables Gallery, Cromarty. Her sound and video works were included in 'Dark Space II' at the Royal Scottish Academy and at 'Expo' Sonic Arts Festival in Plymouth. She performs regularly around the UK and Europe with her band 'Nalle', who have their second album out on Chicago's Locust records early next year. She was recently featured in MAP magazine.

On 22nd November at 2pm Hanna will present a radio broadcast about her exhibition for the temporary radio station based in Kensington 87.7 KVFM.

The Bridewell Studios Gallery runs and innovative programme of exhibitions, workshops and events that are accessible for the whole community. Drawing on The Bridewell's history as a vibrant artist led organization, we work with emerging and mid-career artists to produce engaging exhibitions across a variety of different art forms.
