Ken Denning was born in Sonderborg, Denmark in 1957. His career as a professional artist has its roots in lithography, serigraphy and photogravure.
His first major UK exhibition of oil paintings took place at this gallery in 2014 and was a great success. This was painting with a difference, committed to the landscape as a form of expression. The first registration of the landscape is a photograph, then a sketch, followed by a period of reflection and a rework of what has been seen into Ken’s own interpretation of that landscape. The finished oils are cool, contemporary oeuvres influenced by Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer and Wilhelm Hammershoi amongst others. Depth is created by shiftings and overlaps, colour is used sparingly and with layering. Two years on, the artist’s work has gently evolved whilst remaining true to his formative years.
Ken has exhibited widely at home and abroad and his work is held in numerous private and corporate collections; also represented in the Royal Collection at the National Gallery of Denmark: Vejle Art Museum; South Jutland Art Museum; Kunstmuseet i Tonder: Guan Shane Art Museum, China; Bibliotheque National de France, Paris; Sasol Art Museum, Stellenbosch, South Africa and Marianne undHeinrich Lenhardt- Stiftung, Kaiserslautern, Germany.
