About
A South of the Mind: Keith Grant's New Paintings of Antarctica
I hope to convey something of the grandeur and cosmic significance of the South. But it is a South of the mind
(Keith Grant, in his journal, 13 December 2017)
The latest exciting series of paintings by Keith Grant comprise an expansive new phase of work inspired by his second trip to Antarctica. For an artist who has always identified with the North, the extreme South provides a context and counterbalance, in representing a terrain that is superficially similar yet so utterly different. And for an artist who is returning to this extreme environment, it has provided an opportunity to go beyond the resplendent mimetic representation of his first response and produce an essential, invigorating interpretation.
