A retrospective exhibition for the late artist Katya Kan

About

We are proud to present this exhibition, which celebrates the life and work of Katya Kan (1988 – 2023). A multidisciplinary artist who left an indelible mark on the International contemporary art scene. Kan explored themes such as sensuality and the complexities of identity, developing an involved and thoughtful practice. Born in Almaty, Kazakhstan and raised in London, Kan's work often references her perspective on her post-Soviet childhood. Through surreal imagery, particularly the recurring motif of the rabbit, Kan invites viewers into a world of utopian nostalgia and childhood escapism. Her exploration of home, belonging, and connection reflects her personal journey from Almaty to London, where she was raised. Despite her tragic passing in 2023, her legacy lives on through her work.

Challenging societal norms through provocative imagery and symbolism, Kan's work challenged viewers to reconsider conventional notions of pleasure and desire. Her advocacy for feminism and exploration of feminine language underscores her commitment to authenticity and self-expression. Her playful parody videos and subversive online persona challenged the art world's obsession with identity politics, prompting viewers to question the nature of artistic expression. Beyond traditional categorisation, Kan's legacy lies in her resistance to societal labels and expectations.

The exhibition features a diverse range of Kan's artworks, including paintings, drawings and video capturing performance, offering viewers a comprehensive look at her multifaceted creativity. As we celebrate Katya Kan's life and work, we honour her mark on the art world and her commitment to authenticity. The exhibition will be a tribute to a visionary artist whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Katya Kan has exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery and ICA London, the LA Pacific Design Centre, the NYC Untitled Space, US, also in galleries worldwide including; Kazakhstan, Russia, Greece, Venice, Paris, and Iceland.

‘My artistic aim is to overcome my marginality through creating a utopian vision, which reconnects me to my childhood. My art explores my status as a half-Asian artist, who doesn’t fit in any cultural hegemony and who has no sense of “home” in post-colonialist, feminist and psychoanalytical terms. A specimen of globalization, I was born in Kazakhstan, my father North Korean and my mother Russian. Having caught a glimpse of the USSR, I have a conflicting perception of cultural systems. Unable to assimilate into any culture, I am a banished outsider with no origins.’ Katya Kan 2020
