About
Katherine Lees was selected by the New Ashgate Gallery team as the most exciting maker at the Festival of Crafts, Farnham Maltings, in October 2015. Katherine is a designer-maker specialising in ceramics which she combines with textiles and precious metals to produce unique objects including screen-printed porcelain vessels and contemporary porcelain jewellery.
Katherine's porcelain vessels are individually made by hand applying print directly to the raw clay surface through a screen. This unusual making technique is used to ensure every vessel is a one-off piece. By combing this relatively new decorating technique with porcelain pressed from Victorian vessels, Katherine produces a product that is contemporary and unique yet somehow reminds us of days gone by.
Katherine is based at her studio; set up in 2013 in the heart of Manchester's creative hub. Inspired by Victorian antique objects, her work celebrates charms, amulets and the symbolism and beliefs we hold which surround these types of objects.
