KARI ROBERTSON: Self evident truths belong to bourgeois philosophy

Following on from her month long N-U Graduate residency at FTHo this spring, Kari Robertson presents her resulting work, alongside a screening event of artists' films and other research material. Drawing on the work and theories of John Latham, and continuing her existing interest in language and how it structures subjectivity, Kari Robertson's work looks at how immaterial and cognitive labour reflects and is reflected in linguistics. The work proposes that nouns are being gradually replaced by streams of verbs and adjectives. Words stop existing as symbols anchored to empirical realities and move into lofty spaces of cerebral description - signifier signifying signifier. Communication, conversely becomes short-hand nodal. Words, and perhaps people, are valued for speed and objective efficiency of performance rather than the quality and nuance of meanings they produce.
