KAREN HOCHMAN BROWN OPENS UNSPOKEN WORD: BEYOND AT TAG GALLERY AS A RETREAT FROM THE CHAOS THAT IS 2020

This has been, to put it mildly, a challenging year. There is no need to enumerate the horrors and difficulties the whole planet is enduring in 2020. We are all living it together through the ever-present media that bombards us daily. It can suck to be an adult. – Karen Hochman Brown

(Los Angeles) –Los Angeles artist Karen Hochman Brown's solo exhibition, Unspoken Word: BEYOND, opening at TAG Gallery November 3rd, presents us with large-scale digitally manipulated representations of an imagined, beautiful and glorious Mother Nature.

“When the realities of ‘sheltering in place’ sunk in, I began traveling through memories of other times and places via my photographic archives. The cloud imagery comes from around the globe, from the sea to the mountaintop. The flowers are from gardens closer to home. I mold the images using ArtMatic Designer by U&I Software, a modular graphics synthesizer program, to create distortions and reflections of my photographs. I finish my work using Adobe Photoshop to assemble and augment the layers into digital collages.

Because I work on a computer, the image I see is bright. There are pixels shining in my face as I create. As a result, I often choose to print my exhibition pieces on either aluminum or as digital prints laminated to a 1/4-inch sheet of acrylic. These substrates mimic the brightness I see on my monitor. I chose large-format acrylic prints for this exhibition to enhance the magnificence of the cloudscapes. The work floats on the wall without a frame. The polished edges of the acrylic reflect the encased artwork adding an extra illusion of depth.”

Unspoken Word: BEYOND runs November 3 – November 28, 2020 at TAG Gallery, 5458 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036. The gallery is open 11am -5pm, Tue.-Sat. Karen Hochman Brown will be at the gallery every Thu.* and Sat. from 1-4pm during the run of the exhibition (*Gallery closed on Thanksgiving).

About Karen Hochman Brown

Karen Hochman Brown is a Los Angeles-based photographer using software to manipulate her photographic images. In her signature style, Hochman Brown bends nature photographs into multi-layered kaleidoscopic constructs. The work is sensitive to the inherent beauty of the subjects as she strives to magnify that quality through focus and repetition. The resulting geometric forms resonate in harmony and discord, creating unique energies. Other work includes a process she calls synthesized photography. The work is a collaboration between her vision and the possibilities available through the pallet of graphics software.

Hochman Brown studied art at Pitzer College, California College of Art and Art Center College of Design, but self-developed her processes through experimentation, relying heavily on skills learned as a graphic designer. Inspirations include Georgia O’Keeffe, Vincent Van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, Frank Stella and the Geometric Abstraction movement.

Hochman Brown has had solo shows with Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH), The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, Santa Barbara, CA, Gallery 825 and TAG Gallery Los Angeles, California Center for Digital Art, Santa Ana, CA, The Gallery at Los Angeles County Arboretum, Arcadia, CA, Yuma Art Center, Yuma, AZ.  She has participated in numerous group shows in the Los Angeles area and throughout the United States.
