Kai-Oi Jay Yung: Amongst Dark Trees, A Clearing

About

Grundy Art Gallery's annual communities and schools exhibition has this year invited artist, Kai-Oi Jay Yung to create Amongst Dark Trees, A Clearing. This new commission includes a series of videos, drawings, a sound responsive light installation and hand-sewn crafted works created through Yung's engagement with schools, communities and the wider public. The show explores loss and liberation from suffering through interpretations of scientific chromatic light treatment and perspectives on the mystical chakra energy centres. Stories of an excessive compulsive ex-hoarder, a meditation savant, an antagonistic stand up comedian and insights from trauma psychologists are reframed into four video narratives. The gallery is interspersed with intimate personal tasks which ask the viewer to manipulate sound-light works with their own inner thoughts and emotions, transforming Grundy into an interactive site for the viewer. This exhibition progresses the artist's ongoing exploration of blockages within the individual and collective psychological and physiological experience of identity. Yung is an interdisciplinary artist, recent projects include performance Military Craft, China, solo show Interval, A Narrative Psychosis, Cornerhouse, Manchester and Image Wars, group show, Abrons Arts Centre, New York. The exhibition will be accompanied by an artist devised programme of performances and panel discussions, public workshops, articles and engagement opportunities with families and schools. Please check our website for more details. Amongst Dark Trees, A Clearing is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
