About
Mark Butler, who is based in Grassington, often works in cast bronze and rusted steel, and is inspired by landscapes, the world of maps, ecology and science. His exhibits are both fascinating and thought-provoking. He casts his bronze pieces himself, working in wax which allows a myriad of different mark making techniques to be used and can capture the tiniest detail. He also often harnesses chance in his work by using thin wax originals, or wood which is not fully burnt out. This creates imperfect and fractured pieces that make a solid permanent material seem fragile and in the process of disintegrating which he uses to mirror the impermanence and vulnerability of the environment around him.
Mark's recent projects include pieces inspired by the microscopic world, Ash tree die-back in the Yorkshire Dales, Maps, and found objects discovered on local walks.
